36. A Different Drummer

Back with another night’s doodle–this time, thinking of music and flow. All of the arts share in the basic elements of design, such as direction, position, movement, and so on. Whatever is composed–visually or otherwise, needs rhythm and flow to feel cohesive (if cohesiveness is desired). Empty space and chaos are givens. They are even part of the creative process at different points. But for those with a yen to tell a story, some type of cohesiveness is important and that is where design elements come in, they offer some control. With my process of idea generation, it starts out with no control–I just make random marks until something emerges, and then I go in for the carving, tightening, and polishing–the storytelling. Other creators may start with control at the very beginning, keeping chaos or randomness at bay. I find my control about half way through the process.
