The Crow Factory

One day, as I walked home, I spotted two crows in angry dispute. There was no obvious clue as to their grievance. It brought to mind politics and the corporate world–men and women in dark suits, many agendas and constant territorial poaching. I began to take notice of crows. I researched them, and a storyline began to unfold.

It grew into an idealist’s tale, a coming-of-age story and mystery, set among crows. Predators, rascals, charmers, peacemakers, mentors, and villains populate it. Power grabs and betrayals happen–and endearing friendships. And finally, a twist at the end solves a whimsical mystery.

There are sixteen illustrations in the book. When I thought of how to illustrate crows I wanted a more realistic depiction. Artificial intelligence was new on the horizon, so as an illustrator, I experimented with it and found it was helpful in giving me a beginning image, but I also found I needed to do extensive alterations (cut, paste, redraw) to achieve what I wanted. In the end, I was pleased with the result. But artificial intelligence has a ways to go before I would find it satisfactory as a substitute for my own work.
